Gel, overlay or acrylic: a simple guide to your next manicure
Long-lasting colour, extra strength or added length? We explain the difference between gel polish, overlays and acrylic extensions.

Gel, overlay or acrylic? They are three of the most popular nail treatments, and each does a different job.
Gel polish
Gel polish is cured under a suitable lamp, so it is dry the moment you leave and does not smudge. Many clients get around two to three weeks of wear, depending on how fast your nails grow and how much you use your hands.
Pick it if you want colour that lasts and your natural nails are in good condition.

Overlay
An overlay is a thin, durable layer applied over your natural nail. It adds protection and support, but does not necessarily make your nails longer.
Pick it if you want to keep your own nails and would like some support while they grow.
Acrylic extensions
Acrylic extensions add length in the shape you prefer — square, round or almond. As your nails grow, they need regular infills, usually every two to four weeks.
Pick it if you want longer nails or a new shape.
Still not sure? Ask your technician when you arrive — we will look at your nails and suggest the best option.
Make it last
- Apply hand cream daily and massage it into your cuticles.
- Wear gloves when washing up or cleaning.
- Never pick or peel off gel, acrylics or overlays — it can damage your natural nails.
